Every spring our pupils plant some veggies at our school´s vegetable garden. We have a crew of a few fifth and sixth graders who take care of the seeds in the green house (built by former teachers a few years ago with some wood and plastic), grow them and then plant them in the yard that we have by the playground.

We basically grow tomatoes, collard greens, onions, cabbage, pumpkin, lettuce and bell peppers. There are some aromatic plants also, such as mint, rosemary or balm.

The most rewarding time of the year for the volunteer horticulturists is fall. We generally collect the products in October and sell them to families and teachers when school is over. The money that we collect is used to buy new seeds, plants or tools. Having a school garden is a great opportunity to spend quality time with students while learning in a different setting.
